How Quiz Game Modes Are Played and Scored
How each quiz game mode is played and how points are calculated, from the learner's point of view.
How many game modes can I use?
GFoundry quizzes have four game modes (Classic, Genius, Ladder, Battle) plus Test Mode, which turns the quiz into an assessment and disables the game modes. You choose which ones are active for each quiz.
Questions can include text, an image and an audio clip.
Each question has 2, 3 or 4 text answer options, one of which is correct.
For how to turn modes on and configure them, see Configuring a Quiz: Game Modes, Test Mode and Rules.
1. Classic mode
How is it played?
The quiz is split into levels. Each level has a fixed number of questions (Questions Per Level). To pass a level, the player must answer at least the number of questions set in Answers Required to Pass correctly. To finish Classic mode, the player must pass all levels (Number of Levels).
How are the points calculated?
Points for Right Answer for each correct answer.
A speed bonus for each correct answer: Points for Quick Answer if it was answered in the first 10 seconds, or Points for Slow Answer if it was answered between 10 and 20 seconds.
When the level is completed, the sum is multiplied by the Level Complete Multiplier.
Points are only awarded when the level is passed. A failed attempt earns no points, so retrying a level many times does not add up points.
2. Genius mode
How is it played?
Genius mode is also played in levels, usually with less time per question than Classic mode (by default, 7 seconds instead of 30). A wrong answer ends the attempt, so to pass a level the player must answer all of its questions correctly.
How are the points calculated?
The player earns Points for Level Complete for each Genius level passed.
3. Ladder mode
How is it played?
The player climbs a ladder of questions (Questions Per Game), where each question is a rung. The game ends at the first wrong answer. The player's level is the highest rung reached in their best game; every new game starts again from the first question.
Unless Use Sequential Questions is on, the questions get harder as the player climbs: easy questions in the first third of the ladder, medium in the second and hard in the last. With Use Sequential Questions on, the questions follow the order set in the quiz.
How are the points calculated?
Points Per Completed Level for each rung climbed above the player's previous best.
A bonus the first time the player reaches 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the ladder.
Example: in a 100-question ladder, a player whose best was rung 20 answers 29 questions correctly and then fails. They earn 9 levels of points plus the 25% bonus, and their level becomes 29. A game that does not beat the previous best earns no points.
4. Battle mode
How is it played?
One player challenges another to play a chosen quiz. The challenger plays first; when they finish, the other player is notified that it is their turn and plays the same battle.
Who wins a battle?
The player with more correct answers wins. In case of a tie, the player who took less time wins.
How are the points calculated?
The quiz awards Points for Win and Points for Lose, as configured for Battle Mode. In the global ranking, the winner receives the points for winning a battle and the loser has the points for losing a battle removed.
5. Test mode
Test mode turns the quiz into a formal assessment with a minimum pass percentage, a number of questions per test, a time limit per question and optional retry rules. It does not award game points; the result is whether the learner passed.
Can I use a spreadsheet to create a quiz?
Yes. In the quiz's Quiz Questions tab, click Import Quiz, download the Template File, fill it in keeping its structure, and upload it as an .xls or .xlsx file. See Creating and Managing Quiz Questions.
How do points and rankings work in the Learn module?
There are two kinds of ranking:
Global ranking: built from the points set in Learn > Quiz Settings > Ranking Score: points for passing a Classic, Genius or Ladder level, points for winning a battle, and points removed for losing a battle.
Quiz ranking: built from the points each player earns in the quiz's game modes, as described above. If Enable Team Rankings is on for a quiz, its preview shows the teams ranking instead of the individual ranking.
