Configuring a Quiz: Game Modes, Test Mode and Rules
What each quiz mode does, where you turn it on, and which rules you can configure for it. Use this as a quick reference when choosing or configuring a mode.
Where do I configure quiz modes?
Quiz modes are turned on per quiz. Open the Learn Content item, go to the Content Management tab, open the Quiz Content row and open the quiz Settings. The Quiz Modes section lists the modes.
The default parameters of each mode (levels, questions, time, points and helps) are set for all quizzes in Learn > Quiz Settings. See Global Quiz Settings and Quiz Issues.
What quiz game modes are available?
There are four game modes (Classic Mode, Genius Mode, Ladder Mode, Battle Mode) plus Test Mode, which turns the quiz into an assessment and disables the game modes.
Classic Mode is the standard format. Learners answer questions one by one, level by level. You can set the number of levels, questions per level, correct answers required to pass, points for right, quick and slow answers, and a level completion multiplier.
Genius Mode challenges learners to answer quickly and accurately within a limited time. A wrong answer ends the attempt. You can set the maximum levels, questions per level and points for completing a level.
Ladder Mode is a ladder of questions where each question is a rung. The game ends at the first wrong answer, and questions get harder as learners climb unless Use Sequential Questions is on, in which case they follow the quiz order. You can set the questions per game, points per completed level and, per quiz, bonus points at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the ladder.
Battle Mode is a head-to-head challenge: one learner challenges another, plays first, and the opponent is then notified to play the same battle. The learner with more correct answers wins; in a tie, the faster one wins. You can set the questions per game and points for winning or losing.
Test Mode turns the quiz into a formal assessment with time limits, pass or fail criteria and retry rules. When Test Mode is enabled, the other game modes are disabled.
For how points are calculated in each mode, see How Quiz Game Modes Are Played and Scored.
What else can I set in the Quiz Modes section?
Make Genius and Ladder Modes Always Available: users can play Genius and Ladder Modes without first completing Classic Mode.
Use Sequential Questions (Ladder Mode): questions are asked in a fixed order.
If you see Configure Classic Settings, Configure Genius Settings, Configure Ladder Settings or Configure Battle Settings, you can override that mode's parameters (structure, points, helps and rules) for this quiz only. Reset to Defaults restores the global values. Test Mode is configured only per quiz, with Configure Test Settings.
Some of these options are not shown on every platform.
What other rules can I configure for a quiz?
In the quiz settings you can also:
Use Enable Quiz to make the quiz visible to learners, or turn it off to take it back to draft.
Set the Mobile Quiz Background Image, Web Quiz Background Image and Quiz Intro Image.
Turn on Explain Wrong Answers Immediately or Explain All Answers Immediately.
Turn on Enable Question Timeout, so an answer is marked as failed if the user does not respond within the maximum time.
Turn on Enable Team Rankings, to show the teams ranking instead of the individual ranking on the preview.
Turn on Paid Quiz and set a Quiz Price greater than 0. Learners buy paid quizzes with coins, so this requires coins to be active on your platform.
How do I turn a quiz into a formal assessment with Test Mode?
Turn on Test Mode and click Configure Test Settings. The following options are available:
Allow Retry Until Pass?: learners can retake the test until they pass.
Require all content completion before test: the learner must complete all content before starting the test.
Require content review on failure: works together with Allow Retry Until Pass. A failed attempt resets content progress, and the learner must review all content before retrying.
Hide correct answers: correct answers are not shown to the learner after the test.
Randomize questions: questions are presented in random order; when off, they follow the sequential order.
Minimum Pass Percentage (0-100): the minimum score to pass. Default: 70.
Questions Per Test: how many questions each attempt includes. Default: 10.
Maximum Seconds Per Question: the time limit per question. Default: 30 seconds.
Test Rules: instructions shown to learners, which you can write in each language of your platform.
Note: Test Mode suits compliance training, certifications and other controlled assessments. Because it disables the game modes, use it on dedicated assessment content rather than on quizzes meant for practice and engagement.
What validation rules should I know?
Quiz Price: required when Paid Quiz is on, and it must be greater than 0. Paid quizzes are bought with coins, so learners can only buy them when coins are active on your platform.
Minimum Pass Percentage (0-100): in Test Mode Settings, the value cannot be above 100.
Answers Required to Pass: in Classic Mode, it cannot be greater than Questions Per Level.
