Why does my quiz question import fail or not show the questions?

Quiz imports run in the background and fail as a whole if one line is wrong. Check column order, the difficulty column, the ID column and whether the content is published.

Why does my quiz question import fail or not show the questions?

Quiz questions are imported from an Excel file in the background. Most failures come from the file's layout, the difficulty column, the ID column, or a quiz that is already published.

How the import works

  1. In the quiz, open Import Quiz Questions and use Download here the Template File to get the template.

  2. Fill in the template and upload it with Upload XLS file. Select Replace existing questions only if the file should replace the current questions.

  3. The message Quiz is being imported in background means the file was accepted. When the import ends you receive a notification: Success importing gamelet with the number of questions imported, or Error importing gamelet with the reason.

If any line has an error, nothing from the file is imported. Fix the line named in the error and upload the whole file again.

What the file must look like

  • The columns are read by position, in the order of the template, starting on line 2. Do not move, add or remove columns.

  • Column A is the question. Column B is the correct answer; columns C to E are the other answers.

  • Column F is the difficulty and is required: 1 (easy), 2 (medium) or 3 (hard).

  • Only the sheet that is open when you save the file is imported. Keep the questions in a single sheet.

  • Images are added by URL in the image column (JPEG, PNG or GIF). Images pasted into cells are ignored.

Common error messages

  • Invalid dificulty level X on line N, accepted value are 1,2,3: the difficulty on that line is empty or not 1, 2 or 3. This also happens when the cell is formatted as a date, a percentage or true/false: set the column's format to Text or Number and type the value again.

  • Could not find question for ID: the ID column contains the ID of a question that does not belong to this quiz, typically because the file was exported from another quiz. Clear the ID column to import the lines as new questions. Keep the ID only when you want to update existing questions of this same quiz.

  • Unable to start import on published gamelet: the Learn Content is published. Unpublish it, import, and publish it again.

  • Import already in progress: wait for the current import to finish.

  • Not an image or could not load image with url: the image URL is not a public JPEG, PNG or GIF. Fix or remove the URL.

The import succeeded but the quiz shows fewer questions

The number of questions shown in each play depends on the quiz settings, not on the size of the file. See The 5 quiz game modes and their rules.

A large file seems stuck

Files with many images take longer, because each image is downloaded. Wait for the notification before uploading again.

When should I contact Support?

Contact Support when the file follows the template, the Learn Content is unpublished, and the import keeps failing. Include the quiz, the time of the upload and the exact error message, and attach the file.
