Evaluation - Career & Scale Settings

Define what employees are evaluated against: the evaluation scales and goal weights in Evaluation Scales Settings, and the careers, job categories, skillsets, skills and eligibility items in Career Settings.

What is this page about?

  • Evaluation Scales Settings: the scales users choose from when they evaluate skills and Smart Goals, and the weights available for goals. Only administrators see this menu entry.

  • Career Settings: the careers and their job categories, skillsets, skills and eligibility items. Users need a career and a job category to be evaluated in a cycle.

How do I configure the evaluation scales?

Go to Modules > Evaluation & Careers > Evaluation Scales Settings. The page has these lists:

  • Skill Evaluation Scale: the options users choose when rating a skill. Use New Skill Evaluation Scale Item and fill in the Name, Description and Weight. Select Does not count for evaluation? for an option that should not count towards the score.

  • SmartGoal Evaluation Scale: the options users choose when evaluating their Smart Goals, configured the same way with New SmartGoal Evaluation Scale Item. Does not count for evaluation? is useful, for example, to defer the evaluation of a goal to the following year.

  • Goal Weights: the weight options that can be assigned to goals, created with New Goal Weight.

  • Skill Weight Scale: the weights that can be assigned to skills for each job category.

  • Letter Grade Scale: if enabled with Letter Grade Scale enabled?, the minimum value for each letter.

Use the Order arrows to change the order in which options are shown.

How do goal weights work?

Goal weights do not need to add up to 100%. Each weight has a label, such as "Very Important" or "Important", and a numerical value that shows its importance relative to the other goals.

For example, if "Very Important" has a value of 50 and "Important" has a value of 25, a "Very Important" goal counts twice as much as an "Important" one. With one "Very Important" goal and four "Important" goals, the weights add up to 50 + 4 x 25 = 150. The "Very Important" goal is worth 50 x 100 / 150 = 33.33%, and each "Important" goal is worth 25 x 100 / 150 = 16.67%.

This lets you weight goals by their real importance without adjusting them to reach 100%.

Skill weights are also shown to users, so they know how important each skill is. You assign them per job category when you configure a skill.

How do I manage career settings?

  1. Go to Modules > Evaluation & Careers > Career Settings.

  2. In Careers List, select Add Career, give it a Career Name (for example IT or Marketing) and click Create.

  3. Open the career. In Career Details, add the Job Categories, each with a Category Name and a Functional Level.

  4. In Skillsets, add the lists of skills you want to evaluate (for example Commercial and Technical).

  5. Expand a skillset and use Add Skill. Give the skill a Skill Name and a description, and in Job Category Skill Scales select the scale for each job category.

  6. If you see the Eligibility Items section, add the eligibility items that should be reviewed during the evaluation.
