The Structure of a Mission: Milestones and Goals.

Learn the building blocks of a Mission. Understand the relationship between Milestones (the major steps) and Goals (the specific tasks).

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Every Mission you create, no matter how simple or complex, is built using a simple two-level hierarchy: Milestones and Goals. Understanding how these two components work together is the key to designing a clear, structured, and effective Learning Journey for your employees.

Milestones: The Major Steps on the Map

A Milestone represents a significant phase or major achievement in the journey. Think of Milestones as the main checkpoints on the visual map of your Mission. They break down a long journey into manageable, rewarding stages.

When you configure a Milestone, you can typically define:

  • Name: The title of the stage (e.g., "Week 1: Getting Started," "Mastering the Basics").

  • Image: A unique icon or image that represents the Milestone on the visual path, contributing to the gamified feel of the journey.

  • Order: The sequence of the Milestones, which creates the path the user will follow.

A user only completes a Milestone after they have successfully finished all the specific "Goals" contained within it.

Goals: The Individual Tasks to Complete

A Goal is the specific, actionable task that an employee must complete to make progress in the Mission. Goals are the individual items that are nested inside each Milestone.

This is where the power of the GFoundry ecosystem is truly unlocked. A Goal is not limited to a learning activity; it can be almost any action across the entire platform. This allows you to create a holistic development experience that blends knowledge with practical application.

Examples of Goals you can set:

  • Complete the "Data Security" course (a "Learn Content" item).

  • Achieve a score of 80% on the "Product Knowledge" quiz.

  • Give a "Thank You" badge to a team member (using the Recognition module).

  • Submit the "End of Week Feedback" survey (using the Forms module).

  • Complete a performance review task.

How They Work Together: A Simple Analogy

Think of building a Mission like planning a road trip.

  • The Mission is the entire trip (e.g., "Cross-Country Road Trip").

  • The Milestones are the major cities you plan to visit along the way (e.g., "Reach Chicago," "Visit Denver," "Arrive in Los Angeles").

  • The Goals are the specific activities you must do in each city to continue (e.g., "Visit the Museum," "Take a Photo at the Landmark," "Refuel the Car").

You complete a set of Goals to clear a Milestone. You clear all the Milestones to finish the Mission. By combining these elements, you can design clear, motivating, and comprehensive journeys for your employees.
