Automation targeting: who a platform automation runs for
Each trigger type decides which event starts an automation and who it targets. Some triggers let you narrow this further with preconditions such as groups, teams, or a delay after the hire date.
How is targeting decided?
Targeting comes from the trigger type you choose, not from a separate filter panel. Some triggers apply to every matching user automatically (for example, New User or a training deadline approaching), while others let you set a precondition so the automation only runs for users assigned to specific groups or teams.
How do I set targeting when creating an automation?
Go to Automations and select Add Automation.
Enter an Automation Name.
Select Click to select a trigger type and choose the trigger.
Complete the precondition fields shown for that trigger, such as When assigned to any of the Group(s), When assigned to Team(s), or Delay (in days).
Turn on Enabled and select Create.
Which precondition fields exist?
When assigned to any of the Group(s): the automation runs when a user is added to any of the selected groups. Choose the groups in Select the groups that will trigger this automation.
When assigned to Team(s): the automation runs when a user is added to any of the selected teams. Choose the teams in Select the Teams that will trigger this automation. Available when the Teams module is enabled.
Assign to Career and Career Category: required for the "User assigned to Group" trigger so the user is routed to the right path. Available when the Evaluation module is enabled.
Delay (in days) and Select Onboarding Form: for the onboarding trigger, the form is sent this many days after the user hire date.
How is this different from pipeline steps?
Preconditions decide whether an automation runs for a user. Pipeline steps decide what happens once it runs. Actions such as Add to Groups, Remove from Groups, and Assign Career are pipeline steps, not targeting filters. Add them under Pipeline Steps after you create the automation.
How do I review the rules later?
Open the automation and review Automation Details. The trigger type and its precondition, the pipeline steps, and the current status are shown together. The trigger type cannot be changed after creation.
